Any business that will succeed online must have website traffic and lots of it.

This article tries to explain why your business needs traffic, how irrelevant traffic can hurt your SERP rank or even get you penalized, and show you 24 ways to increase your website traffic in 2019.

What are irrelevant website traffic and how can they affect your SERP rank?

Irrelevant traffic is a general term that refers to visitors that have no real interest in your services, products, and/or content.

They are visitors that were referred to your website by “mistake”.

Why you should care

bounce rate - digital markets journal

Irrelevant traffic can drive your bounce rate off the roof which in turn negatively impact the SERP rank of your website.

One of the most important factors search engines use in ranking your website is your “bounce rate”.

Bounce rate is a measure of the percentage of visitors who enter your website and then leaves “almost immediately” for another website or online resource rather than continuing to view other pages within your site.

Search engines rank websites with a high bounce rate as irrelevant. It is very logical that people would move from one page of your website to another if they found your content interesting and as meeting their needs.

A big website owner with hundreds of thousands of traffic per day, irrelevant traffic might not mean much but a small business owner should take note.

In reality, you cannot guide against irrelevant traffic to your website 100% but following the below instructions will in no doubt reduce your bounce rate, increase the average time on page of your website, and increase targeted website traffic to your website in 2019.

1. On-Page Website Optimization

On-Page-Seo - Digital Markets Journal

On-page optimization is important to website rank on SERP. On-page website optimization involves optimizing on-page parameters and content properties of a given website.

Some of the on-page parameters and content properties of your website are:

Need help with getting website traffic?

  • Title Tag.
  • Keyword density.
  • Adding the “alt” tag to website images.
  • External linking – linking to external resources.
  • Website speed.
  • Description Tag – though not a ranking factor, it’s however good for user experience.

A rock solid on-page website optimization is the way to go in increasing targetted website traffic to your business website or blog in 2019.

PS: Are you on a WordPress website? Then there are a number of WordPress plugins you can use for your on-page optimization. E.g. Yoast, All in One SEO Pack

2. Off-Page Website Optimization

Offsite-SEO - Digital Markets Journal

Optimizing on-page parameters isn’t enough to get you to the first page of search engine – especially Google that will guarantee targeted traffic.

Off-page optimization is synonymous to backlinking from other websites to your blog.

To get the most of backlinking, you should get links from websites with good domain authority and page rank.

Links from spammy websites can get you delisted or even penalized by Google.

Backlinks are and remain one of the most important ranking factors and having lots of them pointing to your website will undoubtedly get you to Google #1 thereby resulting in targeted traffic.

3. Social Shares

Social signals are important to website rank.

It is believed that people mostly connect with others with similar interest and likes.

Positioning social share buttons on your content (especially at the top, bottom or both) provides an easy way for your website visitors to share your website content with their friends (who might have similar interests as your website visitors) on various social media platforms.

For maximum exposure, I recommend that you add Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube share buttons on your website.

A number of other social media share buttons you can add to your website are those that lead to Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Digg, etc.

Social shares are easy and very simple ways of getting free referrals from other people who found your website interesting.

8. Create Valuable Content

content is king - digital markets journal

Ever heard the phrase “content is king”?

Since the emergence of inbound marketing, online marketing has moved from “promoting” products or services through “ads” to forming relationships with your website visitor before turning them to your customers.

Here my philosophy about content: “good content is what gets visitors to your website, better content is what keeps them coming back”.

Fresh valuable content can also be very helpful to your website in that it can reduce your bounce rate, increase the average time on page of your website visitors, improve your CTR which ultimately will drive traffic to your website by improving your web visibility.

9. Submit Your Website to Google

broken link - digital markets journal

Broken links are dead-links that aren’t good for Search Engine and also for readers.

Search engines crawlers hate broken links, which might end in low ranks in SERP and fewer traffic to your website.

Broken links are common in old content due to the fact that the external links in your content might be dead/broken.

Removing dead/broken links from your website improves your SERP ranking which in turn translate to more traffic.

13. Go HTTPShttps - digital markets journal

In August 2014, Google released an update where they announced the https was a ranking factor.

HTTPS used to be a lightweight ranking factor affecting only 1% of Google’s search queries in 2014.

Read part of the article:

…a very lightweight signal — affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content— while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS

This has now evolved and is a heavy ranking factor for all search queries.

For example, searching for any keyword on Google will return websites with https on google and on other search engines.

Want more traffic? Go https://

14. Improve on Your Website Speed

website speed digital markets journal

Improving your website speed is not only a ranking factor but also enhances your user experience.

Website visitors generally expect your website to load in 5 seconds or less and anything more than that generally sends people off your website.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

15. Write Very Long Content

content is king - digital markets journal

MOZ did an extensive on over 90 ranking signals research a few years back and they found out that very long and comprehensive content tend to rank better on SERPs.

This could be because long content makes people stay longer on your page and reduces the bounce rate of your website.

Hence you want to do this to get to Google #1 for relevant keywords.

16. Optimize for Long-Tail Keywords

There are literally two types of keywords; long-tail and short-tail keywords.

For example, “digital markets Journals in Winnipeg” can be said to be a long-tail keyword but “digital markets” is a short-tail keyword.

Short-tail keywords are more difficult to compete for. This is because big organizations with better brands must have been competing for those keywords.

Optimizing for long-tail keywords is the way to rank quickly on Google for small business owners or new website owners.

17. Land A Publication Column

How does landing a publication column direct traffic to your website?

Publications/News websites usually have good domain authority and page rank. Getting backlinks from publication/news websites is a good way of getting good link juice back to your website which gives you better rank on search engines.

18. Engage on Reddit

Reddit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members.

Engaging your connections on Reddit can also give you free referrals.

You are also able to add links back to your website from answer questions or in your own articles.

20. Drive Traffic To Your Website From Forums

Forum posting simply means writing new threads or replying to old one in forums and bulletin boards in order to get good inbound links to your website or blog.

The way to go about it is to first research for top forums or bulletin boards in your country, sign up on a number of them and start getting involved by posting new topics or answering old ones.

YouTube is the second biggest search engine as of today with over 1.9 billion active users.

24. Add Forum to Your Website

An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.

They differ from chat rooms in that messages are often longer than one line of text, and are at least temporarily archived.

Forum and discussion boards keep people interested in your topics coming back to your website.

Social media marketing strategy has evolved over the years, at least since the first social media platform was launched in 1996 by SixDegrees.

What is Social Media Marketing Strategy?

social media marketing strategy-digital markets journal

A social media marketing strategy that works involves a lot of moving parts. You must be able to determine what your campaign goals/objectives are, the best social media platform your best ROI, A/B Testing, etc. Understanding these many components will determine the overall success of your campaign.

Highlighted below is a list of very important factors to capture in a social media marketing strategy that will work in 2019:

  1. Develop a Business Website
  2. Clearly Describe Your Campaign Objective(s)
  3. Create Your Buyer Persona
  4. Determine The Best Social Media Platform For Best ROI
  5. Budgeting
  6. Model Your Campaign – Initial Draft
  7. Design A/B Test
  8. Launch Your Campaign
  9. Measure and Test Feedback
  10. Reports and/or Documentation

Designing the right social media marketing strategy for your business can be very arduous since there are over 20 major social media platforms in the world as of 2019 and identifying the right one for business can be difficult.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

This article does not only show you what makes a platform good or preferable but also provide answers to “why you should choose a social media platform for your business”.

1. Develop A Business Website

Although this might seem lame but believe it or not, I’ve also come across many people looking to achieve success on social media without a website.

Yes, you can still score some success online without a website, however, having your own business site helps you get the best ROI per campaign.

Your website is a backbone to your social media marketing strategy in that every piece of content; including video, picture, sales pitch all link back to your website where your audience can dwell further learning about your other products or services and making purchases.

Read The Importance of a Website for Your Business Success

By and large, my rule of thumb is that “never launch any form of social media campaign without a business website”

[the_ad id=”3169″]

2. Clearly Describe Your Campaign Objective(s)

A comprehensive social media marketing is an intersection of objectives and internal capacity. Describing your campaign objective is the first component of a social media marketing strategy.

Your campaign objectives must highlight your desired result/outcome haven taken all other factors such as budget, campaign goals, market size & segmentation into consideration.

Campaign objectives also make it possible for you to properly measure your campaign performance and return on investment (ROI).

In lieu of this, your campaign objective amongst other things must be SMART, i.e.

  1. Specific – objectives should be focused, clear, unambiguous and very concise. For example, your campaign objective could be to get 10000 new facebook likes or it could be to get a percentage conversion from your website visitor. It must be very clear and precise.
  2. Measurable – an unmeasurable objective is the one that won’t go anywhere. Majority or all social media engines have highly developed insight or analytics and reporting dashboard which allows you to measure the performance of your campaign.
  3. Achievable – successful campaigns are products of extensive research. How do you measure how achievable a campaign is? The answer to this is mostly anchored on budget and your capacity to offer products or services. For example, there is no point designing a campaign for 2000 referrals you only have the capacity to manage 32.
  4. Relevant – Relevance means that your objectives are aligned with your mission. Campaign objectives that don’t further your mission or cause become a distraction from a non-profit’s true purpose.
  5. Timely – campaigns that have a start and end dates motivates your user to take immediate action.

While nothing is impossible, campaign objectives are often pivoted by two things:

  1. SMART
  2. Budget

3. Create Your Buyer Persona

In a nutshell, your buyer/user persona is a model of your ideal customer/user by using multiple demographics such as age, gender, location, interests, likes, socio-economic class, etc.

Creating a buyer persona for your business is important because it creates a visual representation of your ideal buyer or customers.

Also, your user persona makes it possible for you to determine the social media platform to find your buyer and provides other information such as when best to publish your ads for best engagement.

4. Determine The Best Social Media Platform For Your Campaign

As of 2019, there are more than 50 social media platforms and more than 20 major ones currently running on the internet.

Therefore, I am going to discuss those we can describe as the major ones and explain why you might want to signup on them for your business needs.

  1. Facebook – Facebook is unarguably the biggest social media platform ever created. The platform boasts of over 2.32 billion active users monthly. NB – active users are Facebook users that log into their Facebook account at least once in 30 days. Almost everyone is on Facebook or will be at some point. By November of 2018, the total number of active users on YouTube has risen to more than 1.9 billion. Add YouTube to your bucket list and you’re on the right track for online success.

Founded on December 28, 2002, and launched on May 5, 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking, including employers posting jobs and job seekers posting their CVs. Linkedin currently has over 260 million active users according to the statistics published by Omnicore Agency in December 2018
  6. Pinterest – Pinterest, Inc. is a social media web and mobile application company that operates a software system designed to discover information on the World Wide Web, mainly using images and, on a smaller scale, GIFs and videos. By September of 2018, Pinterest already surpassed over 125 million monthly active users.
  7. Tumblr – Tumblr is part microblog, part social network, which was launched in 2007. Does your buyer persona have an interest in blogging and/or does he live in the United States of America? Then chances are high he’s already on Tumblr. The website had over 700 million unique visitors in 2018. Read more on Expanded Dramblings

The above is a list of what I consider to be the biggest social media marketing platforms to consider for your business.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

 5. Budgeting

Budgeting sometime is directly proportional to the success of your social media marketing strategy.

More money often translates to better reach, more leads, and conversion.

Although there are a number of other technical factors such as landing page optimization, page responsiveness, and speed that must be taken into consideration to get more leads, allotting the right budget for your social media campaign is key to any success.

Creating a rock-solid buyer persona will also assist you in making the right budgeting decision.

6. Model Your Campaign – Initial Draft

I always encourage that you create an initial draft of your campaign before launch.

When you create a draft, you’re mirroring your campaign’s setup. This lets you prepare multiple changes to a campaign without impacting its performance.

7. Design A/B or Split Test

A/B or Split testing produces show what actually works in your marketing. With the split test, you’re able to continuously test your hypotheses to see if your campaign is yielding good results.

Furthermore, A/B test also helps you to better understand your visitors by testing different variables.

8. Launch Your Campaign

The campaign launch is usually one of the seamless things to do. You only get here after taking all variables such as your budget, buyer persona, user demographics, A/B split test, etc. into consideration.

By now you must have also resolved which social media marketing platform to publish on and the type of campaign (Free or Paid) you wish to run.

9. Measure and Test Feedback

If you have a beginner’s or intermediate experience in social media marketing then you will agree with me that no campaign is perfect at onset or at least come across the phrase somewhere.

Measuring your metrics and analyzing your insight is important.

Over the years, I have seen people launch campaigns and go to sleep. I must street at this point that it is a sure way to failure.

You must have a schedule for measuring and analyzing your insight and performance.

You are able to get some valuable information such as your best performing post/ad, the best time to publish your content (Pictures, Videos and/or Text).

MEASURE!!! MEASURE!!! MEASURE!!!

[the_ad id=”3169″]

10. Reports and/or Documentation

The last part of your social media marketing strategy that works is writing reports.

Comprehensive reports help in determining how to improve future campaigns.

In conclusion, following the above simple steps will in no doubt set you on the right track to achieving business success on social media.
