Marketing plays a crucial part in any company’s success. Great products alone do not guarantee revenue but the ability to show it off to other people and convince them to buy from you and not from someone else – there are other folks out there, trust me.

What Is The Difference Between Pay Per Click & From Search Engine Optimization?

paid advertising difference

Pay per click advertising effort is a type of online marketer where a digital marketer gets traffic to a website through paid efforts. This type of traffic is referred to as paid traffic.

That being said, search engine optimization is a digital marketing technique where an online marketer gets website traffic through organic effort. SEO website traffic is referred to as organic or free traffic.

Another difference between PPC and SEO is that the pay per click advertisement gives immediate success but SEO takes time.

Why Should You Use Pay Per Click Marketing?

Why you should use pay per click marketing

Now you understand a bit about paid advertising and it’s benefits, why should you use it over other methods of online advertising?

The reason is what I mentioned before, the results are almost immediate. All you need to do is create an ad, create your landing page, set a bid, and you’re good to go. Your ads will be enabled within minutes and you will notice an increase in your website traffic.

Another great reason to use paid advertising is that it that it’s not as expensive as you think. Although some keywords can cost a lot of money, however, you can use long-tail keywords which are very cheap. This means you don’t need to focus on the expensive ones. Instead, you can target 100 cheap keywords and get just as much traffic as the big ones.

Increasing the conversion rate of a lead capture page entails optimizing some of the landing page elements.

Generally speaking, a website landing page can be said to be the entry point for a website. Landing pages are usually static by design.

In online marketing, a website landing page (also known as as a lead capture page), is a single static website page that a searcher she when she clicks on an indexed page on search engines, marketing promotion, marketing email, or an online advertisement.

10 Insane High-Converting Landing Page Elements

The main purpose of any landing page is to convert website visitors into paying customers with prominent call-to-action buttons.

Conversions are of different forms and types. For example, newsletter signups, online form submission, free product trials, etc.

There are a number of techniques and strategies used in creating high-converting landing pages. Highlighted below are ten landing page elements that can help your landing page generate more conversions:

[the_ad id=”3169″]

1. Write a Compelling Headline

Landing page elements - writing a compelling headline

Designing a high-converting landing page starts with selecting a compelling page title or headline. As a matter of fact, the success, or otherwise failure of your landing page has a lot to do with your page headline or landing page title.

A page headline must be compelling, and captivating. A landing page headline must able to trigger certain emotions that will compel website visitors to take your desired action (s) which may be to request for a product trial, subscribe for newsletter, make a purchasing decision, etc.

Your headline or title must contain at least one power word and at least another that drives emotions.

2. Structure Your Content to Show Value Upfront

structure your content

Website users remain the most impatient set of people. According to the 15 seconds rule by time magazine, you only have 15 seconds or less to make an impression on your site users. By this, we mean that you a website visitor will make the decision to either leave or remain on your website in fifteen seconds or less.

That being said, what makes a user read through your landing page and take the desired action is value.

Therefore, it is important to always highlight the value(s) your website visitors will get by subscribing to your service in the top area of your landing page.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

Highlighting the values upfront before describing them in details is one of the best strategies for designing a high-converting landing page.

3. Show Testimonials

client testimonials

One of the few things common to all high-converting landing pages is customer testimonials. Testimonials help improve your landing page conversion rate because they add some legitimacy to your landing page and make people more willing to buy from you.

Since online shopping and e-commerce continue to dominate the retail market, customer reviews or testimonials are important to your conversion in that they show the kind of experience others have about your website and makes new buyers comfortable making purchases or signing up for your products.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

I always consider customer testimonials as the PR you are not paying for. You are simply using other people as your own mouthpiece.

This is part of herd mentality and the reason all the worlds biggest online companies, such as Amazon and E bay have based their whole platforms around customer reviews and/or testimonials.

4. Lead Capture

building a lead capture form

Lead capture the process of saving or capturing lead information such as name, phone number, email address, etc in order to convert them into paying customers.

Lead capture has two important components which are the lead capture form and the lead magnet.

A lead capture form can be anything from newsletter form, contact form, product trial form, signup form, etc. The common information usually captured by lead forms are the full name, email address, and phone number.

A lead magnet is often some form of incentive online marketer offer potential customer in order to get their email address and other contact information. The most common types of lead magnets are ebooks, videos, podcasts, infographics, etc.

Lead captures are the most integral element of any landing page and greatly determines landing page success.

5. Prominent Calls-to-Action (CTA)

Call to action button

Calls-to-Actions (CTAs) are another category of important elements of any high-converting landing page. Calls-to-Action (otherwise known as triggers) are various buttons or links placed at strategic sections of a landing page that will trigger an action when clicked upon.

For example, a “download” CTA can load a popup containing a lead form. A website visitor will then need to submit some information before he or she is able to access the download area of the website.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

Knowing the right CTA to use at every given time is important to the overall conversion of your lead capture page.

NB: CTAs must not be randomly used but rather with clear-cut purpose. This is because random or overuse of CTAs might show you as being desperate and turn off some of your potential customers.

I always recommend two CTA at most for any landing page.

6. Consider Placement of your CTA Buttons

calls to action placement

It is not enough to have Calls-to-Actions on a given landing page. This is because the wrong use of CTAs can cause more harm than good.

The right placement of CTA is another important element that determines the conversion rate of a given website page.

My approach always is to have at lead two CTAs with at least one at the end of the content.

Excellent use of CTAs on landing pages is another way of increasing the conversion rate of the page.

7. Highlight Your Clients

highlighting your clients

Everyone wants to see a list of the jobs or companies you have worked on in the past.

Savvy online markets have learned to think like their own customers. As the owner of a big corporation, would you rather work with someone that has a proven track record with Microsoft, Google, British Airways or another person with zero track record?

Highlighting some old or current clients on your landing page adds more credibility to your site.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

You can simply add a project portfolio to your landing page in case you do not have anyone in your clientele list. Showcasing what you have done or executed in the past ina good way to improve your landing page conversion.

I always recommend that you add your biggest clients or portfolio to your landing page

8. Remove Menus

Landing page elements website menus

The purpose of any landing page is to capture leads. Therefore, it is important to reduce the number of links in order to achieve this. For example, a common practice is to remove all links on a landing page.

Online marketers remove all links from a landing page because they often do not want website visitors to have any reason to leave their lead capture page without converting.

Removing all menus and links from a landing page is another strategy that can help improve on its conversion.

9. Create urgency

create-urgency

Have you ever come across a landing page with a countdown or ran into an offer that ends the moment you close your browser window? The answer is most likely yes. We have all come across those squeeze pages at one point in our lives.

Successful online marketers know that people make purchasing decisions based on how they feel at a given point in time.

Asides love and fear, the most intense emotions are the ones with some sense of urgency.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

Another element that often increases the conversion rate of a landing page is urgency. Create a sense of urgency around your product, make the limited offer lasts just for a few hours and you will see your conversion rate go up.

10. Follow a Z Pattern

z pattern

The Z pattern remains the most common and one with the best conversion rate. As shown in the image above, the Z pattern shows how website users often read website content. Majority of website users read the screen from left to right and a lot would jump to another important spot on the website after the first paragraph.

Top social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc all use the Z design approach to their landing page.

facebook z pattern

Although, I always personally recommend a single Z design pattern as in the case of Facebook and the majority of other websites, however, the multiple Z design pattern will also achieve the same result.

writzig-zag-pattern

Sometimes, the difference between a low-performing landing page and a high-converting landing page is the design style and pattern.

Since the start of web search engines, top digital marketing experts have always looked for ways to position websites for better SERPs.  This need has pushed experts to create various search engine keyword tools and techniques that help with keyword research, on-page optimization. While some of the keyword research tools are best for PPC such as Google AdWords planner used for google adword keyword research, other such as SEMRUSH, MOZ KEYWORD TOOL, Ahrefs, Optimizely, etc are also best for both on-page optimization and website backlink analysis.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing - Digital Markets Journal

According to Wikipedia, affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts.

In other words, affiliate marketing is an arrangement you have with an online vendor (merchant, brand or retailer) whereby you get paid for every referral you send their way that performs a certain action such as a simple registration/sign up, actual purchase, survey, etc.

Definition of Important Affiliate Terms

Affiliate Network

An affiliate network acts as an intermediary between publishers (affiliates) and merchant affiliate programs. Affiliate networks allow “affiliates” or publishers to easily find affiliate offerings suitable to their niche and likewise enable affiliate merchants to promote their programs to a larger audience.

Many affiliates and merchants prefer to use affiliate networks to find and promote affiliate programs because of its numerous merits some of which are:

  1. Maintenance – affiliate networks have massive network infrastructure and highly skilled technical personnel that helps maintain affiliate programs. The network manages tracking, sales, commissioning, and the entire affiliate process.
  2. Referral Links – affiliate networks also makes it easy for affiliates to easily create affiliate links for their preferred merchant.
  3. Comprehensive Analytics, Tracking and/or Reporting – analytics, tracking, and reporting is one of the biggest reasons many publishers and merchants use affiliate networks. This is because affiliate networks enable merchants and publishers to easily track their affiliate marketing efforts. For example, affiliates are able to see how much referral, sales and commission from their various efforts and merchants are also able to track the performance of each of their programs and also see their top performing affiliates.
  4. Customer Service/Support – most affiliate (if not all) provides their users (merchants and affiliates) 24/7 customer and/or technical support to quickly address any questions, issues, or concerns.

Affiliate Merchant

An affiliate merchant (also known as “retailer” or “brand”) is a business that increases sales, traffic and brand awareness through online advertising via a network of affiliate websites. Source The Reseller Network. In other words, an affiliate merchant owns the product(s) and/or service(s) promoted by affiliate publishers and is willing to part with some commission when the desired action is completed.

Affiliate merchants pay affiliates a commission for every visit to the website, sign up or every sales conversion meaning they only pay for results.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

What makes a good affiliate network?

One of the major challenges of new affiliates is how to find a good affiliate network. Below is a list of the top factors to consider while choosing an affiliate network to join.

  1. Product Niche – the first step is to know if the affiliate network has offerings that are closely aligned to your blog/website.
  2. Reputation & Trust – reputation is everything when it comes to finding a network to be part of. You are not the first to use a network and will never be the last. Hence, previous or current users must have said some things (both positive and negative) about the network. Use Google to check what people are saying about an affiliate network before you join and “run” if it has more negative reviews than positive.
  3. Tools – does your affiliate network has automation tools that make it easy for you to generate referral links? If NOT, then do not join.
  4. Payment Structure – you want to get paid when you make sales hence it is important to check payment structure of a network and be sure it’s okay with you before joining
  5. Tracking & Analytics Dashboard – tracking and analytics is everything. You want to join a network that does the tracking and reporting of your affiliate marketing efforts. This way, you are able to easily see your marketing performance.

Affiliate Publisher (also referred to as the “Affiliate”)

An affiliate publisher is also known as the affiliate; it is the person who implements the available digital marketing strategies to promote the affiliate merchant’s products and services and gets a commission when the desired action such as sales, sign up, completed survey, etc are generated via his affiliate referral link.

Affiliate publishers are usually bloggers or website owners that are actively promoting a merchant’s products or services.

Customer

A customer refers to all individual customers who click on a certain referral link of an affiliate publisher and make a purchasing decision from a merchant.

15 Quick Tips for Affiliate Marketing Beginners

Ready to get started with affiliate marketing? Here are 15 quick tips to get you started with affiliate marketing.

  1. Define your market niche – Your affiliate marketing success starts from defining your market niche. A market niche is a subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. Your market niche defines the product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs. Your market niche should revolve around your interests. For example, there is no point marketing health-related products if your interests lie in marketing and finance.
  2. Find a product – the next thing you want to do after defining your market niche is to find a suitable product(s) and/or service (s) within that niche. A few questions that need to be answered before choosing a product are:
    1. What are people saying about the product?
    2. Do the product(s) and/or service(s) work?
    3. What’s the product gravity score? Gravity is a measure of the number of affiliates that have made money from selling the product in 30 days or less. The higher the gravity, the better your chances of making money from marketing the efforts
    4. What’s the reputation of the affiliate merchant offering the product?
  3. Understand your user demographic – understanding your user demographics is key to your marketing tactics. For example, it makes sense to markets female lingerings to women and/or persons associated with the female gender and that are 15+ years of age. Having a clear understanding of your user demographics enable you to properly target your target audience via various means for good ROI.
  4. Check product reputation – product reputation plays a key role in your overall success mainly because a good product always sells itself. A good product will have a good reputation which in turn makes it easy for you to market but a bad product is very hard to sell.
  5. Sell what you are knowledgeable about – true and sustainable success comes from doing what you love. The same thing can be said of affiliate marketing. I have a general rule of thumb which only sell what you love.

The hard way is to design your website using some programming languages such as CSS, HTML, Javascript, PHP, etc but the easy way is by using free CMS applications such as WordPress, Joomla or Wix.

This article tries to explain why your business needs traffic, how irrelevant traffic can hurt your SERP rank or even get you penalized, and show you 24 ways to increase your website traffic in 2019.

They are visitors that were referred to your website by “mistake”.

Why you should care

bounce rate - digital markets journal

Irrelevant traffic can drive your bounce rate off the roof which in turn negatively impact the SERP rank of your website.

One of the most important factors search engines use in ranking your website is your “bounce rate”.

Bounce rate is a measure of the percentage of visitors who enter your website and then leaves “almost immediately” for another website or online resource rather than continuing to view other pages within your site.

Search engines rank websites with a high bounce rate as irrelevant. It is very logical that people would move from one page of your website to another if they found your content interesting and as meeting their needs.

A big website owner with hundreds of thousands of traffic per day, irrelevant traffic might not mean much but a small business owner should take note.

In reality, you cannot guide against irrelevant traffic to your website 100% but following the below instructions will in no doubt reduce your bounce rate, increase the average time on page of your website, and increase targeted website traffic to your website in 2019.

2. Off-Page Website Optimization

Offsite-SEO - Digital Markets Journal

Optimizing on-page parameters isn’t enough to get you to the first page of search engine – especially Google that will guarantee targeted traffic.

Off-page optimization is synonymous to backlinking from other websites to your blog.

To get the most of backlinking, you should get links from websites with good domain authority and page rank.

Links from spammy websites can get you delisted or even penalized by Google.

Backlinks are and remain one of the most important ranking factors and having lots of them pointing to your website will undoubtedly get you to Google #1 thereby resulting in targeted traffic.

3. Social Shares

Social signals are important to website rank.

It is believed that people mostly connect with others with similar interest and likes.

Positioning social share buttons on your content (especially at the top, bottom or both) provides an easy way for your website visitors to share your website content with their friends (who might have similar interests as your website visitors) on various social media platforms.

For maximum exposure, I recommend that you add Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube share buttons on your website.

A number of other social media share buttons you can add to your website are those that lead to Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Digg, etc.

Social shares are easy and very simple ways of getting free referrals from other people who found your website interesting.

Ranking #1 on a search engine for relevant keywords is the surest way of increasing your website traffic in 2019

8. Create Valuable Content

content is king - digital markets journal

Ever heard the phrase “content is king”?

Since the emergence of inbound marketing, online marketing has moved from “promoting” products or services through “ads” to forming relationships with your website visitor before turning them to your customers.

Here my philosophy about content: “good content is what gets visitors to your website, better content is what keeps them coming back”.

Fresh valuable content can also be very helpful to your website in that it can reduce your bounce rate, increase the average time on page of your website visitors, improve your CTR which ultimately will drive traffic to your website by improving your web visibility.

9. Submit Your Website to Google

broken link - digital markets journal

Broken links are dead-links that aren’t good for Search Engine and also for readers.

Search engines crawlers hate broken links, which might end in low ranks in SERP and fewer traffic to your website.

Broken links are common in old content due to the fact that the external links in your content might be dead/broken.

Removing dead/broken links from your website improves your SERP ranking which in turn translate to more traffic.

13. Go HTTPShttps - digital markets journal

In August 2014, Google released an update where they announced the https was a ranking factor.

HTTPS used to be a lightweight ranking factor affecting only 1% of Google’s search queries in 2014.

Read part of the article:

…a very lightweight signal — affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content— while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS

This has now evolved and is a heavy ranking factor for all search queries.

For example, searching for any keyword on Google will return websites with https on google and on other search engines.

Want more traffic? Go https://

14. Improve on Your Website Speed

website speed digital markets journal

Improving your website speed is not only a ranking factor but also enhances your user experience.

Website visitors generally expect your website to load in 5 seconds or less and anything more than that generally sends people off your website.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

15. Write Very Long Content

content is king - digital markets journal

MOZ did an extensive on over 90 ranking signals research a few years back and they found out that very long and comprehensive content tend to rank better on SERPs.

This could be because long content makes people stay longer on your page and reduces the bounce rate of your website.

Hence you want to do this to get to Google #1 for relevant keywords.

16. Optimize for Long-Tail Keywords

There are literally two types of keywords; long-tail and short-tail keywords.

For example, “digital markets Journals in Winnipeg” can be said to be a long-tail keyword but “digital markets” is a short-tail keyword.

Short-tail keywords are more difficult to compete for. This is because big organizations with better brands must have been competing for those keywords.

Optimizing for long-tail keywords is the way to rank quickly on Google for small business owners or new website owners.

17. Land A Publication Column

How does landing a publication column direct traffic to your website?

Publications/News websites usually have good domain authority and page rank. Getting backlinks from publication/news websites is a good way of getting good link juice back to your website which gives you better rank on search engines.

18. Engage on Reddit

Reddit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members.

Engaging your connections on Reddit can also give you free referrals.

20. Drive Traffic To Your Website From Forums

Forum posting simply means writing new threads or replying to old one in forums and bulletin boards in order to get good inbound links to your website or blog.

The way to go about it is to first research for top forums or bulletin boards in your country, sign up on a number of them and start getting involved by posting new topics or answering old ones.

24. Add Forum to Your Website

An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.

They differ from chat rooms in that messages are often longer than one line of text, and are at least temporarily archived.

Forum and discussion boards keep people interested in your topics coming back to your website.

There’s no question, in modern times that a chunk of your SEO Strategy is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Consumers and businesses alike are almost always online — and you want to be able to reach them and observe their behavior where they spend the most time.

What is SEO Strategy?

The term strategy is defined as “a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim”.

Hence, an SEO strategy in this context is described as – a set of SEO tactics, techniques or strategies designed to achieve your overall business goals and/or objectives.

While the #1 goal of many businesses remain to create new customers, we can also argue that numerous companies, institutions, and organization prioritize retaining existing customers, brand awareness, forming a new partnership with other businesses in the same niche or others, etc.

Depending on the scope of your business, your search engine optimization strategy might be to increase leads by a certain percentage, increase your website visitors by 40% within a certain timeframe or to sell a number of unit of your product or services during a campaign lifetime.

In achieving your business goal(s), your SEO strategy might be a single approach or might involve multiple strategies nested in a rather complex pattern involving several moving parts.

That said, designing the best search engine optimization strategy for your business can be seemingly difficult.

This article is written to demystify search engine marketing strategy but each type. In this SEO Strategy – 31-Step for 2019 – Fresh Perspective, we shall go into the core of search engine optimization, content optimization, on-page optimization, backlinking profiling and how social signals affects your rank on SERPs.

1. Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization otherwise known as SEO is the process of getting website traffic (or referrals) for “free” from search engines from search engines. It is also the process of getting higher rank for your web pages on search engines such as Google for the purpose of getting visibility, website traffic, and leads. The keyword in SEO is “free” which is what differentiates it from Pay-per-Click advertising otherwise known as PPC (we’ll get to this later).

Search Engine Optimization has several moving parts such as On-Page Optimization, Backlinking and Local SEO.

2. Local SEO

Local SEO a technique used in optimizing your business website for a local audience. Local SEO is more business focused.

Why local SEO? Check out the below mind-blowing statistics:

  • 88% of consumer local business searches on a mobile device either call or visit the business within 24 hours. (Nectafy).
  • 46% of all searches on Google are seeking local information.
  • 97% searched online to find a local business (Source: Hubspot)
  • 50% of people who conduct mobile searches for a local business will visit the store within one day. (Search Engine Land).

From the above statistics, it is clear that optimizing your business for your local customers is the way to go if you have local businesses such as grocery stores, restaurant, gym, etc.

With the local business listing, you are able to supercharge your web rank by adding reviews, business opening and closing hours, business description, etc.

Below are 10 platforms to consider for your business listing:

3. On-Page SEO

On Page SEO - Digital Markets Journal

On-Page SEO is one of the earliest forms of optimization. On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing individual web pages in order to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic in search engines. On-page refers to both the content and HTML source code of a page that can be optimized, as opposed to off-page SEO which refers to links and other external signals.

On-page SEO has evolved over the years and a number of factors to consider for on-page optimization are:

  • Title – this is the title of the article. It is important that you have the main keyword in your article title.
  • Meta Description – although the Meta description is not a search engine ranking factor, it is very useful for end users. It provides a summary of what the page is about to the end user.
  • Keyword Optimization – your keywords must be strategically placed in your page. As a matter of fact, I always encourage your keyword to be on the first line of your content. Also, you must have a rich keyword density in your content.
  • Linking to External Resources – In 2015, Moz carried out extensive research on over 90 ranking factors and found out that Linking to external resources was a big ranking signal.
  • Write Very Long Content – content analysis has shown in recent times that blocs with very long content tend to have better rank and more link juice that ones with short content. For example, pages on Google #1 for any keyword(s) link to resources that have at least 1200 words.

Use the Skyscraper Technique – This technique involves three steps which are:

  • Step 1: Find link-worthy content
  • Step 2: Make something even better
  • Step 3: Reach out to the right people

For example, if you found a resource that says “50 Healthy Snack Ideas” ranking on Google #1, then go to “100” or even “500” and reach out to other relevant sites and see if they are willing to link to your resource.

4. Back Linking

backlink - digital markets journal

In search engine optimization (SEO) terminology a backlink for a given web resource is a link from some other website to that web resource.

Backlink remains one of the most important ranking factors for search engines.

The assumption is that people or webmasters only link to valuable resources.

The more backlink you have to your root domain or a particular page of your website is directly proportional to how better your web page would rank on search engines if all other variable remains constant (sounds like a law of physic?).

Well, backlinking can be said to be an art and deploying the right strategy will guarantee a better ranking of your website but going about it wrongly might also lead to you being penalized.

4b. Backlinking Strategies 101 – How Best to Go About It.

The art of backlinking has evolved over the years and I will share with you a few backlink tricks you can use to get ranked on search engines very quickly.

  • Do not buy backlinks – We found out that a of paid websites that would ask you to pay for 1000 or more backlinks are fakes and will most likely get you penalized and delisted by Google. While I am not saying there’re no genuine places to buy backlinks from, I am only of the opinion that you should focus on natural backlinking strategies.
  • Signup on Niche-Specific Forums and Directories – one of the easiest ways of getting relevant backlinks to your business website is to sign up on some niche-specific directories. There are free and paid ones. An example is Business.com, a niche-specific directory for businesses. It’s a premium directory.
  • Guest Blogging – guest blogging is one of the oldest forms of getting quality backlinks that is still relevant till today. It is a method used by the owners of website/blog to increase traffic to their sites by offering to write content for other blogs in your business niche in exchange for links to their own blogs. The way to go about this is to find 10 blogs in your business niche and contact the webmaster for the possibility of writing for them. It is also important that they will give you a “do follow” link so this would give you good link juice.
  • Supercharge your Ranking with”.Gov” and “.Edu” Links – Though Google says that they do not add more weight to one type of root domain above others, the realities proves differently. Getting a single “.Gov” and/or “.Edu” almost always give you an edge over your competitors. Read Jon Ball’s piece to learn how to build and find powerful EDU backlink on Search Engine Journal.
  • Explore the power of search engine verticals – simply put; a vertical search engine focuses on one specific industry or type of content. Common examples would include a travel search engine like Kayak, e-commerce website like Amazon, real estate site Trulia, or the image-based interface of Pinterest.
  • Getting on vertical search engines for your business niche is a smart way of getting to #1 for some very specific keywords that are difficult to compete for on horizontal search engines.
  • Get quality backlinks by using the broken link strategy – the strategy involves finding broken links and writing comprehensive articles on those links for websites within your business niche. Learn more by reading The Broken Link Strategy By HiveDigital on Moz

While any/all the above backlink strategies would for sure have an impact on your website, the question is what kind of impact, positive or negative?

Factors to consider before getting a link from a website are:

  • Domain Authority &Moz Rank
  • Trust & Citation Flow
  • Spam Score
  • Backlink Status

The above factors can be measured by using the Moz and Majestic Tools

Getting links from the right from is key and important to your search engine rank. Use Moz to check for domain authority, page rank and trust factors

5. NAP – otherwise known as Name, Address, and Phone Number

Name Address and Phone Number - Digital Markets Journal

Nothing can be compared to having a uniform NAP across all your platforms online. Since brand recognition now plays important role in website/page rank on search engines, having a uniform NAP is more important than ever before. From my experience, I’ve seen some businesses have different names on different varieties of listing.

To have a uniform NAP, you should follow the below steps:

  • Define your preferred website title – For example; Digital Markets Journal Inc is not the same as Digital Markets Journal Incorporated Company.
  • Get your dedicated contact number – the number must be open at your business hours.
  • Specify your opening and closing hours.
  • Determine the number of service or products you wish to display
  • Indicate a uniform address

Business description – write a one-paragraph description for your business and stick to it on all platforms.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

Using the above checklist will help you have a uniform NAP for your business everywhere on the internet which in turn improves on your branding and overall web rank on SERPs.

“Google plus shutdown is here and there is nothing we can do about it other than to adapt.” Tayo Olayinka

Google+, pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus, is an Internet-based social network owned and operated by Google. The social network was launched in June of 2011 in an attempt to challenge other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter and designed to link Google’s products.

The network experienced tremendous growth in its early days but its usage dwindled over time and will finally come to an end on April 12, 2019.

In this article, I am going to discuss how the Google Plus shutdown will affect your SEO efforts in 2019 and beyond.

Google Plus Logo

On February 01, 2019, the company released a message to their user saying:

In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content.

On April 2nd, your Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April. Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted.

The process of deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts, Google+ Pages, and Album Archive will take a few months, and content may remain through this time. For example, users may still see parts of their Google+ account via activity log and some consumer Google+ content may remain visible to G Suite users until consumer Google+ is deleted.

As early as February 4th, you will no longer be able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities or events.

If you’re a Google+ Community owner or moderator, you may download and save your data for your Google+ Community. Starting early March 2019, additional data will be available for download, including author, body, and photos for every community post in a public community.

If you sign in to sites and apps using the Google+ Sign-in button, these buttons will stop working in the coming weeks but in some cases may be replaced by a Google Sign-in button. You’ll still be able to sign in with your Google Account wherever you see Google Sign-in buttons.

If you’ve used Google+ for comments on your own or other sites, this feature will be removed from Blogger by February 4th and other sites by March 7th. All your Google+ comments on all sites will be deleted starting April 2, 2019.

If you’re a G Suite customerGoogle+ for your G Suite account should remain active.

Social signals are very important in making links rank higher in SERP. That said, links shared on Google+ tend to have a higher and faster ranking in SERP than pages shared on other social media websites. Hence the Google plus shutdown will in no doubt affect some of your links that derive their authority from Google+

[the_ad id=”3169″]

Expected Impact of The Google Plus Shutdown

The implications of the above of this shutdown are hereby highlighted below.

1. Google Plus users will not be able to share web pages on their Google plus accounts from February 04, 2018 and that all shared content on Google plus account will be deleted from April 04, 2019.

2. You will record notice a significant drop in page rank and authority on all your web pages that rely deeply on social signals coming from Google+ for ranking after the google plus shutdown.

In conclusion, even though Google Plus is coming to the end of its lifetime, it still doesn’t mean that the end has come for your SEO efforts.

Also, you have ample time to quickly backup your previous posts and to start getting signals from other social media platforms or other sources on the internet to keep up.

That said, I like to read your comment(s) so kindly leave me a note down in the comment area if you think I did a great job on this blog, or if you have any other thing you like me to note.

Search Engine Optimization is a highly dynamic field and ranking on the first page of Google requires not only keeping up but also getting ahead of the latest SEO trends.

Mobile Index First

With the continuous increase in the use of the mobile web, Google rolled out something they called mobile first indexing in March 2018.

Part of the statement by Google says: “To recap, our crawling, indexing, and ranking systems have typically used the desktop version of a page’s content, which may cause issues for mobile searchers when that version is vastly different from the mobile version. Mobile-first indexing means that we’ll use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our – primarily mobile – users find what they’re looking for.”

With this announcement, Google indicated that mobile versions of web pages will get a higher ranking than their desktop versions. This move further stresses the fact that mobile responsiveness is key to getting a higher rank in Search Engine Result Pages (SERP).

We expect that this SEO trend will continue in 2019 and there’s no better time to optimize the mobile responsiveness of your website than now.

Content is Still King

I believe you have heard the phrase “Content is KING” once or multiple times. Content optimization has evolved in many ways since the early days of the internet. From keyword optimization to long articles; content optimization will continue to evolve through 2019 and beyond. Two things you like to keep your eyes on as far as content optimization is concerned in 2019 are:

  1. Very long content – keep your content long. I do recommend at least 800-word long content.
  2. Quality content – it is not enough to just write long articles but to also make sure that your articles are educative and of high quality.

Releasing fresh content while keeping the above in mind is a very strong rank signal for your web pages.

Local Search GEO-Targeting

Getting listed in local directories or even Google my business page has remained a major search engine ranking signal since it took off around 2003 – 2005. Local optimization is particularly important in that it provides a platform for local searches. Users can easily check for reviews, maps and other information such as opening/closing hours of business operations. For example, a local grocery store website should be optimized to indicate where the business operates. Small businesses should focus on local search optimization. Local Search and Geo-Targeting remain one of the SEO trends to keep an eye on in 2019.

[the_ad id=”3169″]

Optimize for voice search

Voice optimization is still new in some ways but with 30% of web browsing expected to go screenless by 2020, optimizing for voice is a major and growing SEO trend as we move on in the year. Read Sherry Bonelli’s piece on how to optimize for voice search to learn how to go about voice search optimization.

Improve your website security

Since HTTPS became a ranking signal in August 2014, it has become a major ranking signal for Google SERPs and for other search engines. If you’re a Google Chrome, Mozilla, Safari, etc user, you must have noticed recently how a little message or a lock icon will pop up in the left-hand corner of the URL bar that either says Not Secure or Secure.

These messages are a result of a July 2018 Google security update, whose implementation means non-HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) sites now load with that warning, plus now ranks low on Google SERP. The implication is that you need to add an SSL service to your domain if the only version you have is still the HTTP. There are a number of free SSL providers on the internet but I strongly recommend that you go for paid SSL providers.

Content Optimization Taken One Step Further – (Rank)Brain

RankBrain is a machine learning system that uses artificial intelligence to improve search results and interpret new queries. Essentially, the RankBrain system takes difficult or hard-to-understand queries and relates them to previous searches based on intent and end results.

RanKBrain was launched in 2015 and remains one of the SEO trends in 2019. Read Neil Patel’s article on how rankbrain works to learn more. The most important piece to go away with as far as RankBrain is concerned is that it helps Google better understand your content thereby taking content optimization far beyond keyword optimization but also comprehensibility of your content.

Use Latent Semantic Indexing in your content

Imagine you’re telling a friend about your favorite English Premier League football team “Chelsea FC”. It will seem off if you keep repeating Chelsea FC each time you are referring to your team. You are more likely to use phrases like “the blues”, “the London blues” interchangeably in your discussion.

Same way LSI works. Using different variations of your keyword in your content is one of the SEO trends in 2019.

AMP: Page Speed Boost

Mobile Optimization is the standard for creating new websites today. With Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), Google shows you how to make your mobile page even faster. AMPs are already an important SERPs ranking signal and I expect it to continue to gain more momentum in 2019.

Artificial intelligence RACE

AI technology has massive potential. We have seen a number of digital agencies deploy AI as part of their analytics tools. For examples Companies like Lotlinx uses AI in analyzing user demographics to improve on campaign ROI for its clients. I believe that the AI age for SEO just started and I expect this technology to gain more use in 2019.

Microformats/Schemas

Microformats/SCHEMAS are small HTML patterns that signal information about a website. The more information a search engine knows about the site, the more accurately it can rank it. Search engines will typically award you with a better ranking if you can give an honest description of what your website is about.

That said, SCHEMAS are not for all websites. I only recommend schemas for business websites because they have ratings, hours of operation, location, product pricing, etc.

Website Speed

Beyond good UI, Google does believe that the speed of your website goes a long way in determining the overall user experience of your website and has user experience becomes an important ranking signal, your website speed is also key in determining if your website will make it to the first page of SERPs for relevant keywords.

As you continue to explore optimization techniques and strategies for 2019, you want to take website speed into consideration. I believe this would continue to gain steam in 2019.

Amazon search

First, to be clear, Amazon is not a search engine but studies have shown that more than 52% of consumers visit Amazon first if they have shopping need while more than 50% search Amazon after finding something on another website. These statistics show us that Amazon’s becoming Google of e-commerce. It means that if you sell something and you’re not on Amazon, you are missing out on all those 56% of potential customers.

Structured data becomes more important

Structure data is one of the top SEO trends to evolve in the last few years, Google is accessing more and more data material. Today, Google is also able to create its own meaningful meta-descriptions from existing content.

In addition, the search engine giant uses structured data to create rich snippets. Since the available space has become smaller due to a change in the arrangement of the advertisements, you should make sure to create eye-catching snippets.

Links remain important

Link building remains a major ranking factor in 2019 regardless of what anyone says. The only thing is that it continues to evolve just like every other SEO trends in 2019. For example, In 2018, Gary Illyes from Google said at a conference that “the good old PageRank is still an important ranking signal for Google internally. And link power, or authority, is achieved via backlinks.”

In fact, the so-called “linkless backlinks” may play an even bigger role in 2019. This consideration is based on the fact that Google can also consider mentions of websites or brands on other websites, although no direct link refers to the target page.

A stronger focus on image search

Google significantly upgraded its image search in 2017. Many websites even had to struggle with traffic losses because users no longer have to leave Google to view images and can click their way through them like in a picture gallery. By improving image search Google has certainly responded to an SEO trend.

Visual Search Mobile Optimization

Visual Search Mobile (VSM) has seen a lot of changes since Google launched Google Lens in October 2017. VSM enables users to search for anything from their mobile phones simply by snapping a picture and this app will tell you what it is.

Instead of typing queries into a search engine, you can directly search through images to find similar images, price comparisons, local shopping results, etc. You can also take a picture of a movie poster and Google Lens will show you movie information, trailers, showtimes, and local theaters.
