9. Create urgency


Have you ever come across a landing page with a countdown or ran into an offer that ends the moment you close your browser window? The answer is most likely yes. We have all come across those squeeze pages at one point in our lives.

Although, I always personally recommend a single Z design pattern as in the case of Facebook and the majority of other websites, however, the multiple Z design pattern will also achieve the same result.


Sometimes, the difference between a low-performing landing page and a high-converting landing page is the design style and pattern.

It is also the process of getting higher rank for your web pages on search engines such as Google for the purpose of getting visibility, website traffic, and leads. The keyword in SEO is “free” which is what differentiates it from Pay-per-Click advertising otherwise known as PPC (we’ll get to this later).

Search Engine Optimization has several moving parts such as On-Page Optimization, Backlinking and Local SEO.

2. Local SEO

Local SEO a technique used in optimizing your business website for a local audience. Local SEO is more business focused.

Why local SEO? Check out the below mind-blowing statistics:

  • 88% of consumer local business searches on a mobile device either call or visit the business within 24 hours. (Nectafy).
  • 46% of all searches on Google are seeking local information.
  • 97% searched online to find a local business (Source: Hubspot)
  • 50% of people who conduct mobile searches for a local business will visit the store within one day. (Search Engine Land).

From the above statistics, it is clear that optimizing your business for your local customers is the way to go if you have local businesses such as grocery stores, restaurant, gym, etc.

On-Page SEO is one of the earliest forms of optimization. On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing individual web pages in order to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic in search engines. On-page refers to both the content and HTML source code of a page that can be optimized, as opposed to off-page SEO which refers to links and other external signals.

On-page SEO has evolved over the years and a number of factors to consider for on-page optimization are:

  • Title – this is the title of the article. It is important that you have the main keyword in your article title.
  • Meta Description – although the Meta description is not a search engine ranking factor, it is very useful for end users. It provides a summary of what the page is about to the end user.
  • Keyword Optimization – your keywords must be strategically placed in your page. As a matter of fact, I always encourage your keyword to be on the first line of your content. Also, you must have a rich keyword density in your content.
  • Linking to External Resources – In 2015, Moz carried out extensive research on over 90 ranking factors and found out that Linking to external resources was a big ranking signal.
  • Write Very Long Content – content analysis has shown in recent times that blocs with very long content tend to have better rank and more link juice that ones with short content. For example, pages on Google #1 for any keyword(s) link to resources that have at least 1200 words.

Use the Skyscraper Technique – This technique involves three steps which are:

  • Step 1: Find link-worthy content
  • Step 2: Make something even better
  • Step 3: Reach out to the right people

For example, if you found a resource that says “50 Healthy Snack Ideas” ranking on Google #1, then go to “100” or even “500” and reach out to other relevant sites and see if they are willing to link to your resource.

In search engine optimization (SEO) terminology a backlink for a given web resource is a link from some other website to that web resource.

Backlink remains one of the most important ranking factors for search engines.

The assumption is that people or webmasters only link to valuable resources.

The more backlink you have to your root domain or a particular page of your website is directly proportional to how better your web page would rank on search engines if all other variable remains constant (sounds like a law of physic?).

Well, backlinking can be said to be an art and deploying the right strategy will guarantee a better ranking of your website but going about it wrongly might also lead to you being penalized.

The art of backlinking has evolved over the years and I will share with you a few backlink tricks you can use to get ranked on search engines very quickly.

  • Do not buy backlinks – We found out that a of paid websites that would ask you to pay for 1000 or more backlinks are fakes and will most likely get you penalized and delisted by Google. While I am not saying there’re no genuine places to buy backlinks from, I am only of the opinion that you should focus on natural backlinking strategies.
  • Signup on Niche-Specific Forums and Directories – one of the easiest ways of getting relevant backlinks to your business website is to sign up on some niche-specific directories. There are free and paid ones. An example is Business.com, a niche-specific directory for businesses. It’s a premium directory.
  • Guest Blogging – guest blogging is one of the oldest forms of getting quality backlinks that is still relevant till today. It is a method used by the owners of website/blog to increase traffic to their sites by offering to write content for other blogs in your business niche in exchange for links to their own blogs. The way to go about this is to find 10 blogs in your business niche and contact the webmaster for the possibility of writing for them. It is also important that they will give you a “do follow” link so this would give you good link juice.
  • Supercharge your Ranking with”.Gov” and “.Edu” Links – Though Google says that they do not add more weight to one type of root domain above others, the realities proves differently. Since brand recognition now plays important role in website/page rank on search engines, having a uniform NAP is more important than ever before. From my experience, I’ve seen some businesses have different names on different varieties of listing.

To have a uniform NAP, you should follow the below steps:

  • Define your preferred website title – For example; Digital Markets Journal Inc is not the same as Digital Markets Journal Incorporated Company.
  • Get your dedicated contact number – the number must be open at your business hours.
  • Specify your opening and closing hours.
  • Determine the number of service or products you wish to display
  • Indicate a uniform address

Business description – write a one-paragraph description for your business and stick to it on all platforms.

“Google plus shutdown is here and there is nothing we can do about it other than to adapt.” Tayo Olayinka

Google+, pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus, is an Internet-based social network owned and operated by Google. The social network was launched in June of 2011 in an attempt to challenge other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter and designed to link Google’s products.

The network experienced tremendous growth in its early days but its usage dwindled over time and will finally come to an end on April 12, 2019.

In this article, I am going to discuss how the Google Plus shutdown will affect your SEO efforts in 2019 and beyond.

On February 01, 2019, the company released a message to their user saying:

In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content.

On April 2nd, your Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April. Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted.

The process of deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts, Google+ Pages, and Album Archive will take a few months, and content may remain through this time. For example, users may still see parts of their Google+ account via activity log and some consumer Google+ content may remain visible to G Suite users until consumer Google+ is deleted.

As early as February 4th, you will no longer be able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities or events.

If you’re a Google+ Community owner or moderator, you may download and save your data for your Google+ Community. Starting early March 2019, additional data will be available for download, including author, body, and photos for every community post in a public community.

If you sign in to sites and apps using the Google+ Sign-in button, these buttons will stop working in the coming weeks but in some cases may be replaced by a Google Sign-in button. You’ll still be able to sign in with your Google Account wherever you see Google Sign-in buttons.

If you’ve used Google+ for comments on your own or other sites, this feature will be removed from Blogger by February 4th and other sites by March 7th. All your Google+ comments on all sites will be deleted starting April 2, 2019.

If you’re a G Suite customerGoogle+ for your G Suite account should remain active.

Social signals are very important in making links rank higher in SERP. That said, links shared on Google+ tend to have a higher and faster ranking in SERP than pages shared on other social media websites. Hence the Google plus shutdown will in no doubt affect some of your links that derive their authority from Google+

Expected Impact of The Google Plus Shutdown

The implications of the above of this shutdown are hereby highlighted below.

1. Google Plus users will not be able to share web pages on their Google plus accounts from February 04, 2018 and that all shared content on Google plus account will be deleted from April 04, 2019.

2. You will record notice a significant drop in page rank and authority on all your web pages that rely deeply on social signals coming from Google+ for ranking after the google plus shutdown.

Part of the statement by Google says: “To recap, our crawling, indexing, and ranking systems have typically used the desktop version of a page’s content, which may cause issues for mobile searchers when that version is vastly different from the mobile version. Mobile-first indexing means that we’ll use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our – primarily mobile – users find what they’re looking for.”

With this announcement, Google indicated that mobile versions of web pages will get a higher ranking than their desktop versions. This move further stresses the fact that mobile responsiveness is key to getting a higher rank in Search Engine Result Pages (SERP).

We expect that this SEO trend will continue in 2019 and there’s no better time to optimize the mobile responsiveness of your website than now.

Content is Still King

I believe you have heard the phrase “Content is KING” once or multiple times. Content optimization has evolved in many ways since the early days of the internet. Since HTTPS became a ranking signal in August 2014, it has become a major ranking signal for Google SERPs and for other search engines. If you’re a Google Chrome, Mozilla, Safari, etc user, you must have noticed recently how a little message or a lock icon will pop up in the left-hand corner of the URL bar that either says Not Secure or Secure.

These messages are a result of a July 2018 Google security update, whose implementation means non-HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) sites now load with that warning, plus now ranks low on Google SERP. The implication is that you need to add an SSL service to your domain if the only version you have is still the HTTP. There are a number of free SSL providers on the internet but I strongly recommend that you go for paid SSL providers.

Microformats/SCHEMAS are small HTML patterns that signal information about a website. The more information a search engine knows about the site, the more accurately it can rank it. Search engines will typically award you with a better ranking if you can give an honest description of what your website is about.

That said, SCHEMAS are not for all websites. I only recommend schemas for business websites because they have ratings, hours of operation, location, product pricing, etc.

Beyond good UI, Google does believe that the speed of your website goes a long way in determining the overall user experience of your website and has user experience becomes an important ranking signal, your website speed is also key in determining if your website will make it to the first page of SERPs for relevant keywords.
