According to Wikipedia, a Google penalty is the negative impact on a website’s search rankings based on updates to Google’s search algorithms or manual review.

Google penalties are of two types namely google manual penalty and algorithmic change.

The penalty can be a by-product of an algorithm update or an intentional penalization for various black-hat SEO techniques.

Good thing is that I’m going to show you how to determine if your website has been penalized by Google, identify the type of penalty that you’ve been hit with and ways to resolve google penalties.

First things first

If your SERPs rank and/or website traffic dropped abruptly, then it’s very likely you’re site has been penalized by Google.

Google Penalties

Lamentably, in the event of a Google penalty, many webmasters go into panic mode and start ‘fixing’ things that aren’t actually broken, often making things worse.  In order to form a recovery plan, it is important to first properly diagnose the source of the penalty.

Thus, the first step is to determine whether the traffic drop was as a result of a Google penalty and if so, figure out if it is due to algorithmic update or manual penalty cause by black-hat issues on your website.

This is the most common type of Google penalty. It is as a result of algorithmic change or update. An algorithmic update is a continuous change/update in Google search algorithms for the purpose of ranking high-quality pages on SERP.

Understanding Google Search Algorithms can sometimes become overwhelming, especially for SEO newbie and wonder how not to run afoul of any of them (panda, penguin, pigeon, hummingbird).

One of the first few ways to identify if you have been slammed with a Google penalty is a sharp decline (or no traffic at all) in the number of visits to your website which can be tracked in your Google Analytics account.

When this is observed, then you might like to login to your Google webmaster tools for more insight.

Use Google Webmaster Tools

The webmaster tools help you find out if you are under a manual penalty.

Follow the below steps to find out:

  2. Click on Search Traffic
  3. Select Manual Actions from the dropdown.

If you see the message “No manual webspam actions found” then you are clean and do not need to worry on taken further action.

However, in the event that there is a manual Google penalty, then you should read the message and correct the problems before requesting a review of your web pages.

How to Recover from Google Penalty

The best way to recover from a Google penalty is not to get hit by it in the first place.

From my experience webmasters are always scheming for ways to maneuver their way to the top of Google SERP for relevant keywords without following a due process which usually gets them in the way of penalties.

The way to succeed online is to be committed to creating great content and be patient with it.

Being consistent with this will eventually make you get noticed by search engines and the much-needed success would follow.

Fruition will give you an impact probability score. The higher the percentage of probability, the greater the likelihood that you’re site has been penalized by Google.

Final Thoughts

Once you’ve narrowed it down to the cause of the penalty, you can begin to formulate an action (recovery) plan.

If you’ve been hit by Penguin penalties, analyze your backlink profile and anchor text distribution using Ahrefs.

If you think Panda is the culprit, do a full site audit looking for duplicate content and site structure problems.

Once you’ve completed your recovery plan file a reconsideration request with Google. It is not uncommon for these requests to be rejected several times before it is granted. Be patient.

As a word of advice, please consider your link building profile and your on-page optimization. Remove backlinks from spammy websites and be sure to be careful of duplicated content on your website. You also do not want to make sure that your website is secure by adding SSL to your current website if not yet secure.

By using the methods mentioned above, you will be able to determine the cause of your penalty and how to come out from it if you have been slammed by one.

A comprehensive social media marketing is an intersection of objectives and internal capacity. Describing your campaign objective is the first component of a social media marketing strategy.

Your campaign objectives must highlight your desired result/outcome haven taken all other factors such as budget, campaign goals, market size & segmentation into consideration.

Campaign objectives also make it possible for you to properly measure your campaign performance and return on investment (ROI).

In lieu of this, your campaign objective amongst other things must be SMART, i.e.

I always encourage that you create an initial draft of your campaign before launch.

It is also the process of getting higher rank for your web pages on search engines such as Google for the purpose of getting visibility, website traffic, and leads. The keyword in SEO is “free” which is what differentiates it from Pay-per-Click advertising otherwise known as PPC (we’ll get to this later).

Search Engine Optimization has several moving parts such as On-Page Optimization, Backlinking and Local SEO.

Local SEO a technique used in optimizing your business website for a local audience. Local SEO is more business focused.

Why local SEO? Check out the below mind-blowing statistics:

  • 88% of consumer local business searches on a mobile device either call or visit the business within 24 hours. (Nectafy).

On-Page SEO is one of the earliest forms of optimization. On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing individual web pages in order to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic in search engines. On-page refers to both the content and HTML source code of a page that can be optimized, as opposed to off-page SEO which refers to links and other external signals.

On-page SEO has evolved over the years and a number of factors to consider for on-page optimization are:

  • Title – this is the title of the article. It is important that you have the main keyword in your article title.
  • Meta Description – although the Meta description is not a search engine ranking factor, it is very useful for end users. It provides a summary of what the page is about to the end user.
  • Keyword Optimization – your keywords must be strategically placed in your page. As a matter of fact, I always encourage your keyword to be on the first line of your content. Also, you must have a rich keyword density in your content.
  • Linking to External Resources – In 2015, Moz carried out extensive research on over 90 ranking factors and found out that Linking to external resources was a big ranking signal.
  • Write Very Long Content – content analysis has shown in recent times that blocs with very long content tend to have better rank and more link juice that ones with short content. For example, pages on Google #1 for any keyword(s) link to resources that have at least 1200 words.

Use the Skyscraper Technique – This technique involves three steps which are:

  • Step 1: Find link-worthy content
  • Step 2: Make something even better
  • Step 3: Reach out to the right people

For example, if you found a resource that says “50 Healthy Snack Ideas” ranking on Google #1, then go to “100” or even “500” and reach out to other relevant sites and see if they are willing to link to your resource.

In search engine optimization (SEO) terminology a backlink for a given web resource is a link from some other website to that web resource.

Backlink remains one of the most important ranking factors for search engines.

The assumption is that people or webmasters only link to valuable resources.

The more backlink you have to your root domain or a particular page of your website is directly proportional to how better your web page would rank on search engines if all other variable remains constant (sounds like a law of physic?).

  • Signup on Niche-Specific Forums and Directories – one of the easiest ways of getting relevant backlinks to your business website is to sign up on some niche-specific directories. There are free and paid ones. An example is Business.com, a niche-specific directory for businesses. It’s a premium directory.
  • Guest Blogging – guest blogging is one of the oldest forms of getting quality backlinks that is still relevant till today. It is a method used by the owners of website/blog to increase traffic to their sites by offering to write content for other blogs in your business niche in exchange for links to their own blogs. The way to go about this is to find 10 blogs in your business niche and contact the webmaster for the possibility of writing for them. It is also important that they will give you a “do follow” link so this would give you good link juice.
  • Supercharge your Ranking with”.Gov” and “.Edu” Links – Though Google says that they do not add more weight to one type of root domain above others, the realities proves differently. Since brand recognition now plays important role in website/page rank on search engines, having a uniform NAP is more important than ever before. From my experience, I’ve seen some businesses have different names on different varieties of listing.

To have a uniform NAP, you should follow the below steps:

  • Define your preferred website title – For example; Digital Markets Journal Inc is not the same as Digital Markets Journal Incorporated Company.
  • Get your dedicated contact number – the number must be open at your business hours.
  • Specify your opening and closing hours.
  • Determine the number of service or products you wish to display
  • Indicate a uniform address

Business description – write a one-paragraph description for your business and stick to it on all platforms.

“Google plus shutdown is here and there is nothing we can do about it other than to adapt.” Tayo Olayinka

Google+, pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus, is an Internet-based social network owned and operated by Google. The social network was launched in June of 2011 in an attempt to challenge other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter and designed to link Google’s products.

The network experienced tremendous growth in its early days but its usage dwindled over time and will finally come to an end on April 12, 2019.

In this article, I am going to discuss how the Google Plus shutdown will affect your SEO efforts in 2019 and beyond.

On February 01, 2019, the company released a message to their user saying:

In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content.

On April 2nd, your Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April. Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted.

The process of deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts, Google+ Pages, and Album Archive will take a few months, and content may remain through this time. For example, users may still see parts of their Google+ account via activity log and some consumer Google+ content may remain visible to G Suite users until consumer Google+ is deleted.

As early as February 4th, you will no longer be able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities or events.

If you’re a Google+ Community owner or moderator, you may download and save your data for your Google+ Community. Starting early March 2019, additional data will be available for download, including author, body, and photos for every community post in a public community.

If you sign in to sites and apps using the Google+ Sign-in button, these buttons will stop working in the coming weeks but in some cases may be replaced by a Google Sign-in button. You’ll still be able to sign in with your Google Account wherever you see Google Sign-in buttons.

If you’ve used Google+ for comments on your own or other sites, this feature will be removed from Blogger by February 4th and other sites by March 7th. All your Google+ comments on all sites will be deleted starting April 2, 2019.

If you’re a G Suite customerGoogle+ for your G Suite account should remain active.

Social signals are very important in making links rank higher in SERP. That said, links shared on Google+ tend to have a higher and faster ranking in SERP than pages shared on other social media websites. Hence the Google plus shutdown will in no doubt affect some of your links that derive their authority from Google+

Expected Impact of The Google Plus Shutdown

The implications of the above of this shutdown are hereby highlighted below.

1. Google Plus users will not be able to share web pages on their Google plus accounts from February 04, 2018 and that all shared content on Google plus account will be deleted from April 04, 2019.

2. You will record notice a significant drop in page rank and authority on all your web pages that rely deeply on social signals coming from Google+ for ranking after the google plus shutdown.

In conclusion, even though Google Plus is coming to the end of its lifetime, it still doesn’t mean that the end has come for your SEO efforts.

Also, you have ample time to quickly backup your previous posts and to start getting signals from other social media platforms or other sources on the internet to keep up.

With the continuous increase in the use of the mobile web, Google rolled out something they called mobile first indexing in March 2018.

Part of the statement by Google says: “To recap, our crawling, indexing, and ranking systems have typically used the desktop version of a page’s content, which may cause issues for mobile searchers when that version is vastly different from the mobile version. Mobile-first indexing means that we’ll use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our – primarily mobile – users find what they’re looking for.”

With this announcement, Google indicated that mobile versions of web pages will get a higher ranking than their desktop versions. This move further stresses the fact that mobile responsiveness is key to getting a higher rank in Search Engine Result Pages (SERP).

We expect that this SEO trend will continue in 2019 and there’s no better time to optimize the mobile responsiveness of your website than now.

Content is Still King

I believe you have heard the phrase “Content is KING” once or multiple times. Content optimization has evolved in many ways since the early days of the internet.   1. Very long content – keep your content long. I do recommend at least 800-word long content.

Local Search GEO-Targeting

Getting listed in local directories or even Google my business page has remained a major search engine ranking signal since it took off around 2003 – 2005. Local optimization is particularly important in that it provides a platform for local searches. Users can easily check for reviews, maps and other information such as opening/closing hours of business operations. For example, a local grocery store website should be optimized to indicate where the business operates. Small businesses should focus on local search optimization. Since HTTPS became a ranking signal in August 2014, it has become a major ranking signal for Google SERPs and for other search engines. If you’re a Google Chrome, Mozilla, Safari, etc user, you must have noticed recently how a little message or a lock icon will pop up in the left-hand corner of the URL bar that either says Not Secure or Secure.

These messages are a result of a July 2018 Google security update, whose implementation means non-HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) sites now load with that warning, plus now ranks low on Google SERP. The implication is that you need to add an SSL service to your domain if the only version you have is still the HTTP. There are a number of free SSL providers on the internet but I strongly recommend that you go for paid SSL providers.

Content Optimization Taken One Step Further – (Rank)Brain

RankBrain is a machine learning system that uses artificial intelligence to improve search results and interpret new queries. Essentially, the RankBrain system takes difficult or hard-to-understand queries and relates them to previous searches based on intent and end results.

The most important piece to go away with as far as RankBrain is concerned is that it helps Google better understand your content thereby taking content optimization far beyond keyword optimization but also comprehensibility of your content.

Use Latent Semantic Indexing in your content

Imagine you’re telling a friend about your favorite English Premier League football team “Chelsea FC”. It will seem off if you keep repeating Chelsea FC each time you are referring to your team. You are more likely to use phrases like “the blues”, “the London blues” interchangeably in your discussion.

Same way LSI works. Using different variations of your keyword in your content is one of the SEO trends in 2019.

AMP: Page Speed Boost

Mobile Optimization is the standard for creating new websites today. With Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), Google shows you how to make your mobile page even faster. AMPs are already an important SERPs ranking signal and I expect it to continue to gain more momentum in 2019.

AI technology has massive potential. We have seen a number of digital agencies deploy AI as part of their analytics tools. For examples Companies like Lotlinx uses AI in analyzing user demographics to improve on campaign ROI for its clients. I believe that the AI age for SEO just started and I expect this technology to gain more use in 2019.

Microformats/Schemas

Microformats/SCHEMAS are small HTML patterns that signal information about a website. The more information a search engine knows about the site, the more accurately it can rank it. Search engines will typically award you with a better ranking if you can give an honest description of what your website is about.

That said, SCHEMAS are not for all websites. I only recommend schemas for business websites because they have ratings, hours of operation, location, product pricing, etc.

Website Speed

Beyond good UI, Google does believe that the speed of your website goes a long way in determining the overall user experience of your website and has user experience becomes an important ranking signal, your website speed is also key in determining if your website will make it to the first page of SERPs for relevant keywords.

First, to be clear, Amazon is not a search engine but studies have shown that more than 52% of consumers visit Amazon first if they have shopping need while more than 50% search Amazon after finding something on another website. These statistics show us that Amazon’s becoming Google of e-commerce. It means that if you sell something and you’re not on Amazon, you are missing out on all those 56% of potential customers.

Structured data becomes more important

Structure data is one of the top SEO trends to evolve in the last few years, Google is accessing more and more data material. Today, Google is also able to create its own meaningful meta-descriptions from existing content.

In addition, the search engine giant uses structured data to create rich snippets. Since the available space has become smaller due to a change in the arrangement of the advertisements, you should make sure to create eye-catching snippets.

Links remain important

Link building remains a major ranking factor in 2019 regardless of what anyone says. The only thing is that it continues to evolve just like every other SEO trends in 2019. For example, In 2018, Gary Illyes from Google said at a conference that “the good old PageRank is still an important ranking signal for Google internally. And link power, or authority, is achieved via backlinks.”

  • Don’t think primarily of backlinks when publishing content on other websites.
  • Always try to satisfy the user’s need at the best of all top-ranked websites on a search term or topic.
